As a Legionnaire, you have one of the best networks of “navigating the VA” close at hand: Your local American Legion Post.

Many Posts feature a Post Service Officer (PSO) who can help advise you on your VA benefits. These officers are trained by your state Department, and kept informed through bulletins and advisories on upcoming benefit changes, claim forms, and typical processes and procedures. Many times, they are also acquainted with several of the local VA benefits personnel you will need to work with.

If your Post does not have a Service Officer, you still have a powerful Legionnaire advantage: Your fellow Legionnaires. Ask around about who has used nearby VA centers and the experiences they’ve had. You may be able to “go to school” on their experiences.

At the Department level, your Department will have a Department Service Officer (DSO) serving your state.

Like your local Post Officer, the DSO is specially trained to help you claim your veterans’ benefits. He or she keeps on top of what is going on with the VA centers, especially at the regional level.

If you don’t know where to go or how to start, just ask. Your Post or Department officers will be happy to help point you in the right direction.

In additional to the American Legion, other Veterans Service Organizations may be helpful, depending on your specific needs.

For example, the Veterans’ Widows International Network, Inc,serves as a resource for veterans widows across the U.S. and overseas.  Organizations such as this can help you connect with people who have similar experiences or service records as yours.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides an online directory of Veteran Service Organizations. You can view by chartered organizations, or search by keyword.
